Biografie

German Egyptologist. Born, Berlin 1897. Died, Innsbruck 1971. Studied Egyptology under H. Ranke at Heidelberg, 1924, then with H. Junker and K. Sethe. Dr. Phil., 1926. Employed initially as an assistant in the Berlin Museum, and also worked at the German Archaeological Institute, Cairo. During his time in Egypt he translated texts collected by the German E. Delta expedition in 1929. Also worked for Chicago House, Luxor, as an epigraphist. Lecturer, Göttingen University, 1943. Professor of Egyptology, Heidelberg University, 1952. Professor of Egyptology, Göttingen University, 1956. Professor (emeritus), Göttingen University, 1965-71. Published extensively, especially religious texts.

Geschiedenis van het archief

(a) Professor Schott lent the original negatives to Dr R. L. B. Moss in 1950. They were used during the compilation of the second edition of the Topographical Bibliography, vol. i, Pt. 1.
(b) The original photographs made from these negatives are in the Abteilung Ägyptologie, University of Trier. There was an exchange of copies of photographs and negatives, completing some of the gaps in the Griffith Institute and Trier sets.
(c) Not known.

Directe bron van verwerving of overbrenging

(a) Professor Schott officially presented the negatives to the Griffith Institute in 1960.
(b) Photographs completing part of the Griffith Institute set were received in exchange from the Abteilung Ägyptologie, University of Trier (Professor E. Winter), in 1992.
(c) Transferred from the Sackler Library Archive Room in November 2018.

(a) Approximately 3,500 negatives recording scenes from private tombs at Thebes, accompanied by a concordance in five notebooks .
(b) There are also several hundred photographs which were received in exchange with the Abteilung Ägyptologie, Trier.

The original nitrate negatives were copied onto 35 mm safety film and the originals destroyed. The consultation set of prints are contact sheets made from the 35 mm negatives.
