  • Measurements (a) 25.6 x 19.6 x 11.3 cm; (b) 25.8 x 19.6 x 9.1 cm [TAA ii.25.1-2].
  • Bear labels including: 'Sensitive to Light! To be opened only in the presence of the receiver'
  • Originally contained the negatives created by Harry Burton during the Tutankhamun excavation. The canisters no longer contain the negatives.

  • Seven glass negatives of the following Harry Burton photographs. Annotations on the original housing indicate these were copied from Howard Carter's set of lantern slides [TAA i.8]. Some of the housing is also marked 'P.F.' so they may have been made on behalf of Penelope Fox for Tutankhamun's Treasures (1951), although not all of the images in this group are included in the publication.

  • Howard Carter and an Egyptian team member examine the lid of Tutankhamun's innermost coffin (255). This coffin was made of solid gold, with incised decoration inlaid with coloured glass and semi-precious stones.

  • This later set of film negatives was made from the original Burton large plate glass negatives (TAA.i.5) and small glass negatives (TAA.i.5A) after the negatives were conserved between 1980 and 1982.

Special Stamp Issue 'Tutankhamun', produced by Royal Mail in collaboration with the Griffith Institute, to mark the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. Royal Mail Group Ltd commissioned the Griffith Institute to act as consultants supplying all the text and required images for all the Special Stamp products.
