Object cards: compiled by Howard Carter and others

Tutankhamun object cards with accompanying photographs, notes (some group notes listed below) and letters, compiled by Howard Carter and other members of the excavation team [TAA i.1.1-620]

  • Most cards are manuscript records, as well as many original typescript records
  • Many cards are illustrated with drawings of objects, or details of objects, by Howard Carter and A. C. Mace

    The object cards record:

    • Object number, main description of the object, location in the tomb, measurements, description of the object - Howard Carter and A. C. Mace (1922-1925)
    • Hieroglyphic inscriptions, transcriptions and translations - Mostly Alan H. Gardiner and P. E. Newberry, but some inscriptions are transcribed by Carter
    • Conservation records - Alfred Lucas and A. C. Mace (1922-1925)
    • Botanical and textile notes - P. E. Newberry
    • Photographic documentation - Harry Burton

Object cards: typewritten copy

  • Complete set of typescript copies transcribed from the original Tutankhamun object cards, with affixed photographs of the drawings on the cards, again made from the original set, see TAA i.1.1-620.
  • Created in the Griffith Institute and used as a consultation set for visiting researchers until the publication of the records online.
  • Transferred to the Swaffham Museum in Norfolk on 22 March 2024.

Transporting objects from the tomb, lantern slides

  • 18 lantern slides.
  • Photographer not known.
  • Photographs were taken in early 1923.
  • A series of images showing objects from the Antechamber being transported from Tutankhamun's tomb to the nearby 'laboratory' (KV15, Sethos II).

Biographical Material

This series includes material created by Newberry and material related to Newberry created by others. It includes newspaper cuttings, letter lists, diary notes, photographs, and material relating to Newberry's genealogical research.

This series also includes Newberry's excavation diary during his work for Lord Northampton from 1898 to 1899.

Seven negatives: Burton photographs, probably copied from lantern slides

  • Seven glass negatives of the following Harry Burton photographs. Annotations on the original housing indicate these were copied from Howard Carter's set of lantern slides [TAA i.8]. Some of the housing is also marked 'P.F.' so they may have been made on behalf of Penelope Fox for Tutankhamun's Treasures (1951), although not all of the images in this group are included in the publication.
