Published volumes

A complete set of De Keersmaecker's publications on early travellers' graffiti from Egypt and the Sudan, presenting graffiti left by (mostly) European visitors at sites during the nineteenth century (print volumes and Word files).

  • Volumes I-XII
  • Index to volumes I-XII
  • Additional volumes [I], II, III.[I]-II-[III].

Most publications represent a single site or part of a site, and within each publication, the graffiti are organised in groups:

  • Graffiti with names with a date also recorded, arranged chronologically, supplemented by biographical information
  • Graffiti with names without accompanying dates, arranged alphabetically, supplemented by biographical information
  • 'Unclassifiable' graffiti, partial names or initials
  • Index of names
  • Photographs of a selection of graffiti
  • Short essays on individuals
  • Bibliography.

The Word files, from which the PDFs uploaded here have been created, seem to be the original version of the publications. They present some dissimilarities with the final print volumes. The set of print volumes contain some annotations and related loose documents, both added later by De Keersmaecker.

Journals

The journals cover 5 seasons:

  • 1901-1902 (working with G. A. Reisner);
  • [1902-]1903 (working with G. A. Reisner).

Burton negatives - small glass plate

Harry Burton's small glass plate negatives

Howard Carter's negatives

Later film negatives, made from original Burton photographs

  • Some are original Harry Burton negatives.
  • Carter's negatives are views of the area around the tomb entrance and the outer sealed doorway when the tomb was found in 1922 and before Burton joined the Tutankhamun excavation team in December 1922.
  • Glass and film negatives.
  • Approximately 1000 negatives (400 glass and 600 film)
  • Number ranges 1-2024 and i-xcvii
  • The negative number ranges comprise both the small and large negatives (large, see TAA i.5)
  • A few original negatives in this series were created by Howard Carter, see above.
  • Many of the negatives were made later in the Ashmolean Museum photographic studio from photographs supplied by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, following an exchange of images in the 1950s.
  • Includes modern film negatives made in the Ashmolean Museum photographic studio from the original Harry Burton photographic prints in the Tutankhamun Archive, Griffith Institute.

Modern negatives: copies of original Burton negatives

  • Copies of Harry Burton's negatives for the excavation of the tomb of Tutankhamun.
  • This later set of film negatives was made from the original Burton large plate glass negatives (TAA.i.5) and small glass negatives (TAA.i.5A) after the negatives were conserved between 1980 and 1982.

Burton, Harry

Seven negatives: Burton photographs, probably copied from lantern slides

  • Seven glass negatives of the following Harry Burton photographs. Annotations on the original housing indicate these were copied from Howard Carter's set of lantern slides [TAA i.8]. Some of the housing is also marked 'P.F.' so they may have been made on behalf of Penelope Fox for Tutankhamun's Treasures (1951), although not all of the images in this group are included in the publication.
  • Burton p0893
  • Burton p1214 & Burton p1237 (on one negative)
