Petrie Journal 1884 to 1885 (Naucratis)

  • November 8, 1884, to May 31, 1885.
  • Handwritten.
  • At Naucratis, Petrie is assisted by F. Ll. Griffith, who is on his first visit to Egypt. In April 1885, Griffith is left to continue excavating at Naucratis while Petrie returns to Tanis to continue the previous season’s work. It was at Naucratis that Petrie earned the moniker “father of pots”, Griffith's being the “father of potsherds”, which is mentioned by Petrie in the journal.
  • Main sites: Naucratis (Naukratis) and Tanis (San el-Hagar).
  • Pages 15-68 and 92 are photocopies of the originals kept in the Egypt Exploration Society in London.
  • Pages 69, 179 and 196-199 do not exist.
  • Pages 21v, 40, 79v, 86v, 91v, 101v, 109v, 121v, 133v, 145v, 160v, 170v, 178v, 183v, 187v, 188v, 193v, 195v, 205v, 207v, 212v, 214v and 216v have not been scanned but are transcribed (secondary information).

Petrie Journal 1885 to 1886 (Naucratis, Nabesha, and Dafana)

  • November 23, 1885, to June 1, 1886.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie, assisted by F. Ll. Griffith and E. A. Gardner, resumes excavating at Naucratis. In January 1886, Gardner is left to continue excavating at Naucratis while Petrie and Griffith begin excavating at Nebesha. At the end of March 1886, Petrie moves to Dafana and excavates there.
  • Main sites: Naucratis (Naukratis), Nabesha (Tell Nebesha; Tell Farun), and Dafana (Tell Dafana; Daphnae).

Petrie Journal 1880 to 1881 (Giza)

  • Petrie's first visit to Egypt commencing with a measurement-survey of the Giza pyramids, which was continued and completed the following season (1881 to 1882).
  • Main site: Giza.

Petrie Journal 1881 to 1882 (Giza and Nile voyage)

  • October 3, 1881, to May 8, 1882.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie's main activity was the continuation of the measurement-survey of the pyramids at Giza, which was started the preceding season (1880 to 1881). This was the first season that Petrie took photographs using the pinhole camera he built himself.

Petrie Journal 1886 to 1887 (Nile voyage and Dahshur)

  • November 29, 1886, through to May 30, 1887.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie and F. Ll. Griffith charter a boat for two months which will take them from Minya to Aswan enabling them to visit many sites along the way. At the end of the two months, they return to Luxor where Petrie commences with his main task of collecting material for his “Racial Types” project which involves the photographing and making squeezes of scenes in the temples at Karnak before he moves across to the West Bank to continue this work in the temples and tombs there. Later in the season, Petrie moves on to Dahshur to survey the pyramids.

Petrie Journal 1887 to 1888 (Medinet el-Faiyum and Hawara)

  • December 5, 1887, through to May 12, 1888.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie begins the season excavating in the temple of Sobek at Medinet el-Faiyum, then moves on to Hawara where he surveys the pyramid, as well as finding many mummy-portraits from the Roman Period cemetery there.

Handwritten copy of Petrie Journals 1893-1897

Handwritten copies, created by Kate Bradbury (m. Griffith), excerpts of Petrie's journals from December 1893 to January 1897. Presumably created by Bradbury when the Petrie journals were circulated to friends and sponsors. The excerpts include:

  • Pages 1-9 - February-April 1893 - Petrie photographing objects in the museums in Bologna, Florence, and Turin, as well as visits to archaeological sites in Italy including Pompeii.
  • Pages 11-51 - 1893-4 - excavations at Qift (Koptos).
  • Pages 52-81 - 1894-5 - excavations at Tukh (Nubt), Ballas and Naqada, Petrie assisted by J. E. Quibell, B. P. Grenfell and Hugh Price.
  • Pages 82-90 - 1895-6 - excavations at Thebes including the Ramesseum, Temple of Thutmose IV and the Temple of Amenophis II.

Griffith), excerpts of Petrie's journals from November 1897 to February January 1901, notes associated with the journal and copy of the N. de Garis Davies journal for 1898 to 1899. Presumably created by Bradbury when the Petrie journals were circulated to friends and sponsors.

Letter exchange between C. H. Read and Petrie

Correspondence exchanged between Charles Hercules Read and W. M. F. Petrie in 1907, two letters and one draft letter.

  • C. H. Read to Petrie, 27-03-1907, 2 pages, comparing the scale of excavations in Egypt undertaken by the Germans and Americans and that the British were falling behind.
  • Petrie to C. H. Read, not dated but presumably 1907, 3 pages, a draft of the reply in response to Read's letter of 27-03-1907, refutes Read's statement, and to the contrary, the British were in fact 'leading the way', describes his excavations in the Palace of Apries at Memphis, has funding for excavating in Egypt for the next 5 to 10 years, and the British Society of Antiquaries need to continue its support of British excavations.

Petrie Journal 1888 to 1889 (Hawara, Gurob and Kahun)

  • Journal letters.
  • October 24, 1888, to June 14, 1888.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie resumes work at Hawara where he continues clearing the pyramid interior, assisted later on by G. W. Fraser. Petrie’s other assistant, M. Amos, is assigned to excavate at Petrie’s concession at Gurob. In January 1888, Petrie and Fraser move on to excavate at el-Lahun and the town of Kahun, Fraser remaining at the site throughout the summer after Petrie returns to England.
  • Main sites: Hawara, Gurob (Kom Medinet Gurob) and Kahun (El-Lahun).
  • Other sites: Birket Qarun (Birket Karun), Dimai (Soknopaiou Nesos).

Petrie Journal 1889 to 1890 (Kahun, Gurob, Bureyr and Tell el-Hesi)

  • September 26, 1889, through to June 1890.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie resumes working at El-Lahun, taking over from G. W. Fraser who had continued working at Kahun throughout the summer, Petrie continues to work at the site until the end of 1889. Petrie then begins excavating at Gurob, assisted by W. O. Hughes-Hughes. In March 1890, Petrie travels on to Palestine to excavate at Um Lakis (near Bureyr), and from April onwards, excavates at Tell el-Hesi.

Petrie Journal 1890 to 1891 (Maidum)

  • Journal letters.
  • November 6, 1890, to June 15, 1891.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie at Maidum for the whole season excavating and recording the tombs, as well as surveying the pyramid. Petrie assisted by G. W. Fraser and F. J. Bliss. In April 1891, Petrie travels to Greece to visit Ernest Gardner, Director of the British School at Athens, where Petrie is able to confirm that the “Aegean” finds from Gurob were manufactured in Mycenae then exported to Egypt.

Petrie Journal 1891 to 1892 (Amarna)

  • Journal letters.
  • October 22, 1891, through to April 23, 1892.
  • Brief entries for dates between April 24 and October 1, 1892.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie is at Amarna for the whole season mainly excavating in the Great Palace where he uncovered a painted pavement decorated with scenes of animals, birds and vegetation. Subsequently, much of the season was devoted to recording the pavement, as well as sealing it with a tapioca-based solution in order to protect the surface. Petrie was assisted by Howard Carter who was in Egypt for the first time. Petrie's opinion of the 17-year-old fledgling archaeologist is recorded in this journal: "Mr. Carter is a good-natured lad, whose interest is entirely in painting & natural history; he only takes this digging as being on the spot & convenient to Mr Amherst [Carter's sponser], & it is of no use for me to work him up as an excavator."

Petrie Journal 1893 to 1894 (Koptos)

  • Journal letters.
  • November 27, 1893, through to February 23, 1894.
  • Handwritten.
  • Petrie is at Koptos for the whole season where he was assisted by James Edward Quibell and Bernard Pyne Grenfell. Petrie discovered three temples and found evidence of constant occupation at the site, from the Predynastic period through to the Roman era. Petrie also discovered three Predynastic colossal statues of Min beneath a Ptolemaic pavement, one statue is now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and the other two are in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Petrie's excavations at this site initiated the formation of the highly-regarded Egyptian workforce specialising in archaeological excavation and referred to as "Quftis".
