Notes on rock tombs at Sheikh Said including copy of inscriptions from tombs 1 and 2, and tombs numbered by Norman de Garis Davies 15,18, 19 and 20 (TopBib iv.189-190). Also includes list of the tombs at Sheikh Said numbers 1-25.

Includes reference to NB [Notebook] 5/17.

This group of material relates to ancient Egyptian religion and culture including Newberry's research on the cults of ancient Egypt and so-called 'Arts of Life' such as making fire and keeping bees.

Research material on personal and place names

Research material on personal and place names. It appears the folder may have been reused as there is the reference PEN/G.IV/F.E on the cover which has been crossed out and inside the folder there is a list titled PEN/G.IV/F.E on tomb scenes, which does not relate to the contents.

The folder contains:
-Card catalogue and notes on personal names. The cards include hieroglyph transcriptions for personal names, variations of names, and references to occurences and published sources. There are small and large cards. The large cards appear to have been organised alphabetically and some of the smaller cards have been inserted accordingly.
-Card index titled 'Hieroglyphic' on personal names. Cards include hieroglyphs, their transcription, published sources, and notes on their meaning.
-Notebook containing notes in German on hieroglyphs, possibly personal names. The title page lists the following publications: Hoffman, Konrad, 'Die theophoren Personennamen des älteren Ägyptens' (1915) (OEB 141591) and Sethe, Kurt, 'Untersuchungen zur Geschichte und altertumskunde Äegyptens' (1896) (OEB 150123).

Biographical Material

This series includes material created by Newberry and material related to Newberry created by others. It includes newspaper cuttings, letter lists, diary notes, photographs, and material relating to Newberry's genealogical research.

This series also includes Newberry's excavation diary during his work for Lord Northampton from 1898 to 1899.

Group photographs with Egyptologists

Folder containing 3 black and white group photographs which include Percy Newberry, and all appear to have been taken in Egypt.

Photographs include the following information:

  • A note on the back suggests it was taken in the 1920s and names Abu Bakr, Hermann Grapow, Percy Newberry, Georg Steindorff, Hermann Junker and Selim Hassan.
  • The back of the photograph is date stamped 17 January 1930, and a note reads 'A Benni Hassane' [at Beni Hasan].
  • Note on the back of the photograph suggests that it was taken at Cairo University in the 1920s and lists the people seated left to right as: 1. [?], 2. [?], 3. Selim Hassan 4. Newberry 5. [?] 6. Junker 7. Vikentiev 8. Henri? Frankfort 9. [?] and in the front row 1. Baudouin? Van de Walle, 2. [?], 3. [?].
